DOS ain't dead

I really like the concept of this software. I think it would be a good thing to have in DOS. Any of the wizards of DOS around here think it can be ported? I suspect it would be a welcome addition to many people's software.
I don't know anything about compiling linux programs to DOS, but if it can be done, I might help with what I can :)

Silly me, forgot to include a description of the program.
It allows you to browse, search, download and watch youtube videos from your terminal. It can be used with external players (like mplayer) or simply download the file from youtube. Good to search for a video without using a browser (no javascr***, no advertising, no flash).

Who knows. I think the last Python port to DOS was 2.4. Not only is that old, but it's questionable how complete the port it is.

MPlayer and Python DOS ports are large resource intensive ports. They might not perform too well or acceptably and might require a computer where Windows ports might work more optimally. Windows port of Python is full featured.

Windows 9x DOS prompt can run win32 console programs so you don't need a DOS port (pure win32 console port would probably have better performance and more features anyway). If there is a recent Win9x Python port at all.

But, I would question the need to run it under DOS or Windows. It might preform the best on Linux. MPlayer (or mpv) work great under Linux framebuffer, not requiring X server at all. So this might work very well on PIV and newer which are probably needed anyway to decently play high resolution videos.

On those, more recent PCs, Linux binaries might be better optimized anyway, performing better (comparing with DJGPP, not Win32 binaries). They will probably also be smaller (DJGPP has a certain overhead).

But I don't have anything against those who prefer to use DOS for that. Just... I doubt you will have any performance benefits on the somewhat newer PCs, on the contrary.

I was actually interested in using this in older machines, a simple text interface with Youtube that could be used to download videos (in a selected quality) so they could be played in the pc (using Mplayer or Quickview), would certainly alleviate the issue with ads and such. I don't know if Lynx already gives us that, but I am assuming Javascript could be an issue.

Absolutely correct.
I have used Arachne and YTCrack for years.
Played the videos with MPlayer or QuickView.
No adverts.

Thanks for the info, I was unware of that first link. I thought too, that ytcrack addon for arachne had not been updated for years. Lol, guess I was wrong. Thanks! That makes it unnecessary to have mps-youtube in dos.

P.S.: The program I suggested is a linux program, not a windows one, why did you said "no wincrap needed"?
