DOS ain't dead

GOG.com currently offers the 1992 platformer Jill of the Jungle: The Complete Trilogy from Epic MegaGames for free.

It includes the three episodes:
* Jill of the Jungle
* Jill Goes Underground
* Jill Saves the Prince

As this is a DOS game, the installer includes, among the game, DOSBox version 0.74-2. Unfortunately you can't unpack the installer with "innounp". I already created Unpacking Jill of the Jungle with innounp 0.47. I had to fire up an XP virtual machine to run the installer and copy files back to my physical machine. There I could run it with DOSBox.exe -conf ..\dosbox_jill.conf -conf ..\dosbox_jill_single.conf -noconsole -c exit.

One can unpack now "setup_jill_of_the_jungle_1.0_(24660).exe" with innounp 0.48, but that doesn't really help, because you only get numerous LZMA2-compressed files. Maybe https://github.com/onitake/uninno would fit my needs, but it's written in Perl and (for me) not worth to waste more time on this.

When http://constexpr.org/innoextract/ will be updated to support Inno Setup 5.6.2, it should work best, because it already supports GOG Galaxy file parts.

I had no problems with innoextract 1.8 to extract the game on Windows XP: innoextract -d jill "setup_jill_of_the_jungle_1.0_(24660).exe"

Then deleted the "jill\DOSBox" folder and copied everything from "jill\__support\app" over to "jill". Changed to "DOSBox" and ran DOSBox.exe -conf ..\dosbox_jill.conf -conf ..\dosbox_jill_single.conf -noconsole -c exit from there.

I was watching AVGN's colleague play (modern) Shadow Warrior 2 on stream. Seems the original is also freeware on GOG nowadays ("Classic Complete", aka full game plus two expansions). I downloaded the offline installer, but I haven't tried unpacking or anything yet, only played a small bit on Windows under the included DOSBox. Apparently this game is very similar to Duke Nukem 3D (Build engine), same kind of gameplay (e.g. multiple weapons, map, inventory).

Just FYI.

GOG's 14th anniversary sale ends in two days, so I got six games:

* Blake Stone
* Rise of the Triad
* Super 3D Noah's Ark

(all based upon the Wolfenstein 3D engine)

... and also:

* Soccer Kid
* Jazz Jackrabbit
* Wacky Wheels
