North Korean like paradox (Miscellaneous) |
Do you know what is interresting?
We have at least two good, still developed DOS kernels, many active compilers but almost no living programs (or games)
It is like in North Korea where they have quite good roads but no cars --- DOS-u-akbar! |

Maybe there's no such motivation, we have a lot of old good working DOS sw. If it would be opened, then it may be updated by peoble but only few people would have time to develop some complex application from the scratch to reach such as good level than existing app and even make it better... --- DOS gives me freedom to unlimited HW access. |

No new programs? UIDE, JEMMEX, p7zip, and yes many compilers and assemblers. If you think nothing is being written, then why are there so many "announcements"?
Games? What, Dungeon Crawl:Stone Soup doesn't count? Or do you mean like 3D Doom-ish games or puzzle games? There's quite a few games (ahem, MegaBrutal's unfinished one). Why, do you want to request one? Maybe I can point you to a good, free one. |

He probably though about user SW, not system tools and drivers (can be mentioned part of DOS). --- DOS gives me freedom to unlimited HW access. |

BTW, North Korea (according to yesterday's Parade magazine) doesn't even allow Internet access. Sounds like fun.
P.S. Forgot about Powerpaint, VGAPaint/386, and TinyPaint (screenshot drawn by yours truly, heh). And I'm sure there are others. (Apparently the DOS community is less organized than its penguin brethren, so we don't always know "whats new" etc.) |

For spreadsheeth i've found As easy as in shareware :
ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/spreadsheet/asa57d.zip
Unfortunaly no source is disponible on web (but the program it's quite adbandonedware..)
P.s. the others programs suggested it's all without new release and some years older (ie. i've contacted the support of pace player at his home page without result)..
The north corean paradox strike again : a lots of program with source but non manteined (like cars without spare parts..)

Some people think "The source is available, so you modify it, I'm too busy." Others refuse to use DOS anymore because it ain't 1337 ("leet") enough for them. Others just really are too busy. Others are so stuck in their *nix ways that they refuse to budge an inch for DOS (sadly).
EDIT: Also, since Windows isn't nearly as DOS compatible as it used to be, people can't use old DOS software, and many authors only write what is useful for them (e.g. Odi's LFN tools, abandoned by him since he no longer uses Win98). |

From AS-EASY-AS for DOS:
"This product has been discontinued, and is no longer available or supported, but if some user has a copy of the product they can register it using the product # 570-110-0424-3 There is no need to purchase anything." --- Forum admin |
