I use these two one but I notice that there are no more advanced image viewers.
My computer have vesa 2, its a pentium 166mmx with 32ram. Enough to run DOS and win95.
there are decent Video players in dos like Mplayer, Quickview, and also audio players.. but about image viewers.. I lack in them more customization.
The 800x400 resolution of my laptop screen is one problem. Using win95 is fine cause I have driver to set this resolution.. but not in DOS.
another issuer is the "fit to width". I use the image viewers to read Comics and image texts.. so I need a viewer that fit width so Im able to only do scroll down to read.
Thanks for the replies and the help guys. I understand that Image viewers are not very popular and its hard to find updated projects. |

I don't know if it's exactly what you want, been a while since I tried it, and the official website doesn't have it (anymore?), but try Pace Player:

Hey!! if its easy for you would be a nice present ;)
my specs are:
- 800x480 screen resolution
- image fit to width, so you can only have to press the down arrow key to scroll page down and read. (comic reader)
- continuous vertical scroll. When you scroll down one image and it reaches the end, automatically the next one appear.. so you dont need to press any key to load the next page.. only press the down arrow key. (comic reader )
- enable ALT key to select the top menu bar. My old computer dont have mouse.. so Im keyboard master ;) |

What format are your images (comic) jpg, png etc and how much memory does your laptop have ? .
And how are the comic images named, as in the image viewer needs to know the order to show the next image etc.

I like Pixel for DOS... It is very complete, has resize, lots of other 'professional' functions. Max memory supported is only 128 / 192 MB + 128 MB (?) virtual memory which can be set to RAMDISK. The config file needs to be hacked in order to get > 64 MB though. The "experimental" DOS port here:
http:/ut/www.kanzelsberger.com/pixel/?page_id=4
It buggy and crippled - can't save files (needs a serial / key), and that port isn't supported, so there's no way to purchase it. I haven't been successful in hacking it either. |

Documentations are very boring and time consuming to extract useful informations. So currently development of an ICH5 sound driver stopped at so 30%. I do prefer focusing on the few spare time I have on more productive things ! I tried to follow mpxplay implementation but it do not hook IRQ as required by my current driver implementation.
> ZOOM down,
> YUV4MPEG out, YUV4MPEG in, ...) in the pipeline ?
no currently
I remarked that DUGL Player is very slow decoding theora video compared to others players, so I tried to compile again with other options without success Any hint or ready theora DJGPP binaries welcome.
In fact, I was working on DUGL core library adding :
- CTmouse wheel support
- Keyboard keydown timing integrated inside the keyboard handler (very useful for games)
- Little more better VESA BIOS compatibility
- And the huge new set of graphic functions called "Multi". It's some thing like openGL "Vertex Buffer" when you render a set of pixels, or lines or triangles on a single call, which allow a good speed improvement (for example Multi putpixels have a bandwidth of 25 millions pixels / sec instead of 12 millions pixels / sec with a single call of putpixel) ... I'm still working on .. |

800x480 should be supported by your VESA 2 BIOS to be usable.
Any way I can try to initialise this graphic mode, and if not available revert to 640x480

Ok, but as you have a very few memory I guess that the viewer will keep in memory only one image.

The ALT key to enable menu bar is currently not available on DUGL Plus GUI,
But I guess that the image viewer require only 6 buttons on the bottom of the window ("open" ,"page up", "page down", "begin", "end", "quit") You will have to use tab to move the focus to the wanted button and press space or use keyboard shortcut. |

I'm thinking about a simple text file format descriptor :
---------------------------------------------------
line 0 : DBOOK ; signature
line 1 : [number of pages or images] ; integer
line 2 : [page/image 0 full file name] ; example "c:/mycartoon/superman/page0.png"
.
.
line n : [page/image N full file name] ; example "c:/mycartoon/superman/page[N].png"

Hey.. sorry for not reply sooner:
About the graphic format, only JPG is necesary
About filenames, dont worry about that.
If your program arrange files by names.. all is done now. Because Usually iamges are renamed sequentially: 01, 02, 03.... PIC01, PIC02, PIC03.. etc
Anyway if you want to add a mode to sort files by date... could be nice, (anywa sort by name is enough)

Hi,
Sorry if I tooked some times to reply. I wanted to make a good quality app
here download link DUGL Viewer
Here a screenshot
keyboard shortcuts : (listed in readme.txt)
- Alt+X : Exit
- F3 : Open (if you choose img001.jpg he will pick all img*.jpg files)
- Down : scroll current image down or keep pushed for 0.25 sec to go to next pic
- Up : scroll current image up or keep pushed for 0.5 sec to go to previous pic
- begin : go to first pic
- End : go to last pic
- Right or PageDown : go to next pic
- Left or PageUp : go to previous pic
Sure there a lot of possible improvements like adding page number or capability to choose other than 640x480 video mode.
So I'm waiting for tests and comments. |

wow!! amazing pal!!!
Im totally in love with that feature of load next/previous page maintaining arrow keys pressed ;P all image viewers/readers should include that.
the reader is totally usable.. the images loads amazingly fast (faster than win95 viewers that I was using until now).. some improvements that could be done:
- could be possible 800x480 resolution? (personal request!!!) I have noticed that this res is available in other DOS programs. Anyway more resolutions for other people with other screens sizes would be nice.
- full screen (maybe better full by default)
- auto hide the mouse cursor (no mouse here.. and its always centered into the screen)
This image viewer is unique with this autoload feature!!! Probably no other comic reader is available into DOS.. so you filled a hole in the DOS programs!!
Keep the good job pal!
Edit.- I dont know if that will be complicated.. the last feature that would be need a comic reader for dos is support to load images included into.rar and .zip files.
Today the digital comics are released into .cbr and .cbz files (rar and zip files renamed). Anyway that feature is useful for anyone that store images into zips/rars |

DOS programs can use any resolution which your card support in video BIOS. If your VideoBIOS does not reports the 800x480 resolution in modelist it is a problem.
However you can try these utilities from graphics cards:

It should contain an utility which adds a new modes into modelist. I haven't try it for long time but it could work. --- DOS-u-akbar! |

DUGL Viewer currently works at 640x480 mode only :) lets wait further versions.
Ill test the program you recomend. I can use 800x480 in other msdos toosl without problems... but maybe I can dinf some useful tool in the package :)

If you are using DUGL Viewer with windows 95, then I guess it will always enable a mouse API. Solution will be to use it under plane DOS, or that I change default mouse pointer postion to bottom of the screen.

the brightness is not the problem .. I tried dugl player.. image have more blur now.

here a newer version Dugl Viewer 0.2
- Added displaying : page number / total pages.
- Added sorting images files by name.
- Added current picture smoothing with keyboard shortcut F5 (disabled by default).
- Modified mouse default position to left, bottom.
Speed of loading image should be slower now, specially if smooth is enabled.
But scrolling speed should be much faster.

tested the new version!
the smoothing blurs the image a lot. Some texts are not readable. A new resize interpolation mode would be better than this smooth function.
There is a little fix to do. The program sort images by name so perfect. The problem is that autoload feature only works with images with sequential numbers.
Example: I have a folder with :
cover.jpg
pic001.jpg
pic002.jpg
If I start viewing the images from "cover.jpg".. pic001.jpg is lot loaded automatically.
Just change the code and set the program to load always "the next image of current folder, from current file position".. (not only the ones that have sequential numbers) :) |

Current smoothing is very useful only on the case of up sizing/scaling

I'm thinking about an additif open mode.
for example you push Ctrl+F3, the opened image will be added to current list of images. Which mean on your example, that you will push F3, open "cover.jpg" then push Ctrl+F3 open "pic*.jpg". |

Oh sorry.. forgot to coment ;) the scrolling speed is the same. The image only need an extra second to render when smooth option is on

If its posible for you try other interpolation resize mode.. I pasted some pics as example. Lanczos and spline maybe need to much cpu power.. but there are other modes that are more cpu light and give nice results.
(dont compare your posted images with mines... because your ones are smaller... check how image change between point and other resizers)
Anyway Ill wait to the implementation of the new resolution modes into the program.. Currently Im using 640x480 in a 7,1 '' tiny screen.... maybe using full native res 800x480 the text can be readable with the current smooth feature |

Hi,
dugl viewer ver 0.3
- Added support for a config file "duglview.cfg".
- Modified main window label to display current opened file name.
- Modified auto load files keyboard shortcut to Alt+F3 or Alt+mouse click open button.
- Added support for 24/8bpp uncompressed BMP image format.
- Added support for PCX 8bpp image format
- Added support for GIF 8bpp not interlaced image format.
DUGL viewer 0.3 <direct/dos compatible link>
DUGL Viewer 0.3 <mediafire>
You have to change the [VideoMode] section data to : 800, 480
and [MousePosition] section data to : 0.0, 0.0 - to hide mouse pointer
@DOS386
You have to change both section [KeyBWaitPageUP] and [KeyBWaitPageDOWN] data to : 0, 0.0 - to disable the feature of moving to next/previous page keeping to down/up keyboard button down. |

tested there my 800x480 and its working!!! thanks pal.. really few image viewers support that rare resolution ;)

I think that autoload files should be default mode. Pressing open dialog for each file is tedious. Much easier scroll down the images to watch them all
What about implement a file browser when program start? Some file browser where you just select file and click to load.

I havent tested these new formats.. here all jpg.
About color bits? The program is using 8bits/16/24 mode? I notice in some pic some rare colours...maybe 8bit palette

mouse hidden! ;) now waiting for full screen
About the smooth filter I tested with max resolution of my screen 800x480 and image very blurry.. so its hard to read texts. Maybe this option is better to view simple images.. and maybe some new interpolation mode needed.
Btw the program is being very very usable!! Now Im ready to delete Sea and rest of viewers that I had in DOS. Fit to width and editable screen resolution is rarely implemented |

So this is an another parameter to put into the config file
But I think that for a general image viewer it's more common to load only the choosed file, not the numerical series.

You mean displaying open file dialog at start-up ?

It's a small attempt to make the viewer more useful for other poeple.
Waiting for other file formats like png ..

I'm using 16bits mode (DUGL support only 8bits and 16bits modes). Enough good for most usage, and keep the good balance between speed and quality.

If the image become very blurry after the filter, then your are doing a down resizing. In this case, yes, we need another interpolation mode.

Good I hope that more poeple will also find it useful, and I think now that it's ready to be announced as a new small DOS utility. |

I would forgot the numerical series.. and do like other image viewers do: select an initial image and display it. If you press next (down arrow here) the following image with next name is loaded and so on.
( assuming that files are sort by name now, the autoload sequential number is not necessary)
> You mean displaying open file dialog at start-up ?
a full screen browser like SEA or QV, where you move cursor con up/down arrows and enter to view the pic ( more simple than current load box)

you can implement an key to change mode
- fit to width,
or
-zoom/shrink to fit window
so the program can be used as comic reader or traditional image viewer |

COOL, I'll test (just PNG is missing)

Works.
Issues:
- Multiple masx (known from DUGL PLAYER)
- Previous/Next doesn't work (???)
- Ext-Name makes sense now
- Separate files (known from DUGL PLAYER)
- [sugg] ZOOM control based on width:
- - Never zoom (needs horizontal scrolling)
- - Zoom down if > , keep and center if <= (make this default)
- - Zoom down if > , keep and center if 1 >= x >= 0.9 , zoom up if < 0.9
- - Always zoom if <>, keep if = --- This is a LOGITECH mouse driver, but some software expect here

Currently DUGL Plus GUI do not have such compenent, so require time to develop.

For version 0.3 you need to load by pressing Alt+F3 to enable loading numerical series. else only the choosed file picture will be loaded.
> - Ext-Name makes sense now
Yes but if we have multiple masx
> - Separate files (known from DUGL PLAYER)
Yes this is a little project to make a DAT file like allegro, containing every thing.

Yes. On todo list |

Previous/Next by default would be best way. Press multiple keys to just load pics is a bit tedious |
