I found Grabber and SNARF to be excellent for screencapture. These tools allowed me to screencapture an active DougMenu window. I could not get screenThief and videothief to do that.
Now the problem with Grabber is the occasional "print registration document.." shareware nag on startup, plus the shareware logo it adds to screencapture files. It also saves files in the now older PCX format. The author appears to have disappeared so can't get a full version without these 'features'.
The problem with SNARF is there is no ability to specify which directory to save files - it saves to whatever the current working directory is and there is no native way to unload it. However, these can be fixed by:
1) using loadsys to load snarf. Then I can use loadsys to unload it.
2) modding the snarf binary, changing the capture filename ascii entry from snarf000.bmp to be s:scn000.bin. Prior to loading snarf I use subst to create a S: drive of the directory I want snarf to save my files to.
With those two workarounds I found SNARF to provide excellent screencapture ability.
I have also contact the author of SNARF requesting native abilities to unload itself and specify a directory of where to save screencaptures to. They may be added to a future version.
