There's no V86 mode in 64-bits. Long mode encompasses a compatibility submode and a 64-bit submode (I think). So it's not that NTVDM was removed, it just doesn't work on 64-bits due to the processor. (However, you'd think MS would emulate it a la DOSEMU or DOSBox, but no. If it doesn't make them money, I guess they don't care.)

64-bits is still kinda new territory (although a lot more popular than previously), so we don't really need it (unless you want > 4 GB of RAM). 64-bit stuff takes more RAM (and the address space is technically only 48-bits for now, to be increased eventually).

marco, you run a 64-bit OS, right? What are your experiences? Faster? Slower? Good 32-bit compatibility? Uses more RAM?
