I normally wouldn't either, but I've been running with it for a month or two just for laughs / experimentation, ever since that freedos-user thread where I said it wasn't necessary and some people disagreed. Having seen a few small issues over the weeks, I would agree it's not necessary (or even better to avoid it until needed and only then JEMM386 LOAD at will, unless you really really need UMBs all the time).

No, I wouldn't either, I just wanted to prove a point about how some problems are with extenders and not so much with lack of RAM or DOS or the apps (FLWriter) themselves.

The simple truth is that some (most?) extenders and DPMI hosts were never tested with such high amounts of RAM in all situations. And since most aren't updated anymore, it's kinda a crapshoot what will work and what won't.
