I agree, but I don't think *nix supports such a feature. Feel free to pester Juan on comp.os.msdos.djgpp to implement it. ("Patches welcome", sigh.)

You must've gotten the 2.03p2 (current) binary. Although even the 2.04 (beta) is big (if you include the .DXE files he's using for i18n these days). From your FTP link, it seems that urtf205b.zip was much smaller than later versions. No idea why, but if curious, that would be where I'd check.
P.S. If recent ports are any indication, I think you can "probably" reconfigure the sources and recompile with i18n disabled. I honestly have no idea why he enables it by default.
