I deeply appreciate both responses, and I realize that my error was installing FreeDOS on the machine directly. I'll throw it on QEMU, and go from there. For the record, it seems pretty functional on a fairly modern computer, just doesn't do networking.
But I do appreciate the clarity, hope y'all have a great day.
