There's a new vsbhda release, v1.8: https://github.com/Baron-von-Riedesel/VSBHDA/releases

It's supplied with a new version of hdpmi, v3.23; quite a few very interesting fixes there: https://github.com/Baron-von-Riedesel/HX/releases/tag/v2.23

vsbhda runs on real hardware and has been tested to work with VMWare, Qemu & VirtualBox ( these environments support both HDA and AC'97, VMWare additionally ES1371 ). They also support SoundBlaster emulation natively, of course, but this is often of "minor quality".
