I've discovered a nice DOS RESTORE clone (6.3, by Canadian Mind Products) which claims to handle many MS- and PC-DOS versions (e.g. BACKUPs before 6.0) without trouble. It was shareware for a long time, but it's now freeware w/ .ASM src "for non-military use".

P.S. FreeDOS has no BACKUP/RESTORE at all.
