The best idea is just to use Volkov commander or similar NC clone for it.
Define association for .AVI or .MPG files and play them by pressing enter when highlited by selector.

That is how I use it, with any "file manager" or browser.
But that is only a part of what a GUI for MPlayer could be.

It should be possible to write a DOS GUI for MPlayer that also includes the ability to change settings at will.

That's the point, because of what I'm looking for a DOS GUI.
Have somebody tried to run the portable version of SMPlayer in pure DOS with HX?

NO. I don't use it at all.

I don't use SMPlayer -- i've never been able to get it to work
reliably under my extended Win98SE (DX9, KernelEx, 98SE2ME, etc).

The lightest MPlayer Windows GUI i'm aware of is William Wang's
open-source MPlayer WW (a/k/a MPlayer Lite):

http://www.mplayer-ww.com/eng/

It has the unique property of having the actual MPlayer code
integrated into the GUI executable -- the other MPlayer shells
that i'm aware of just run the separate MPlayer EXE file.

Anyway, based on your query, i tried MPlayer WW in real DOS with
HX and got the following errors:

dpmild32: import not found: ImageList_Destroy
dpmild32: import not found: ImageList_LoadImageA
dpmild32: file COMCTL32.DLL
dpmild32: d:\hx\COMCTL32.DLL: cannot resolve imports

I don't know enough about the innards of HX to know if that's
fixable. I do know (?) that HXGUI has a tough time with apps
that use multiple windows. MPlayer WW doesn't have a visible
menu, just a right-click context menu, so i thought i'd give it a
try for the heck of it.

Anyway, JFYI....

Thank you for your reply. Have you tried also the http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayerguiwin/ in pure DOS?

Hey -- i wasn't aware of that one! It's definitely light, clean,
and basic (remiscent of Media Player Classic). I tried it out
briefly in Win9x, and it seemed nice and stable. Plus, it's very
current (last update 2011-Sep).

But... i'm not hopeful in terms of HX and DOS -- it's another one
of those frontend shells that run the external MPLAYER.EXE file.
And it uses a drop-down main menu. In my experience, programs
with DDMs don't work with HXGUI. But i'll give it a try later
today....

Ok, tried it -- as expected, no go under real DOS and HXGUI.
Here're the error messages:

dpmild32: import not found: ReuseDDElParam
dpmild32: import not found: MapDialogRect
dpmild32: import not found: GetDCEx
dpmild32: import not found: DeferWindowPos
dpmild32: import not found: BeginDeferWindowPos
dpmild32: import not found: EndDeferWindowPos
dpmild32: import not found: CreateDialogIndirectParamA
dpmild32: file USER32.dll
dpmild32: d:\hx\vesa32.dll: cannot resolve imports

Still, a nice MPlayer frontend for Win9x. (But remember to
download the MPlayer of your choice as well -- not included in
the GUI package!)

MPlayer

Thank you for your try and report.
One more question:
Where I should download which version of Mplayer?
(My PC has P200MMX proc., 128MB RAM, nVidia Riva TNT2 32MB,
Creative Encore dxr3 decoder card & SB Live 5.1, MS DOS 6.22)

For plain (no GUI frontend/shell) Win32 MPlayer to use with HX,
the one to get is sherpya's build:

http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer-win32.php

He specifically addressed some issues to make it work under HX,
and he does frequent updates. Be careful though -- he has
separate builds optimized for Pentium 4, Pentium 3, and Athlon
CPUs, as well as a generic build with rtm CPU detection.

You'll also need HX 2.17 (earlier versions won't work?):

http://www.japheth.de/HX.html

With my current system (MS-DOS 7.1, P4, 2g4Hz, 512mb, ATI
Rage 128 Pro Ultra), the video aspect of MPlayer works
flawlessly. I had some previous issues with i845/i865 m/b video
(not just with MPlayer either!), so i switched to the ATI card --
much better! Still no sound though (i'm using Intel m/b ICH4 --
no SB). I don't believe SB Live! will work (directly) with
MPlayer under DOS -- you might need to have the SB16 emulator
driver installed. (Even then?)

I think Khusraw also did some recent MPlayer DPMI builds -- do
a search here. (You don't need HX with those, just CWSDPMI.)

HDPMI32 is sufficient

http://www.bttr-software.de/forum/board_entry.php?id=8648 2010-Sep "Experimental Mplayer build from SVN"

and it has sound (at least some ICH/LDA chips ...) ... Theora is broken ... XXX264 untested or forgot result :-|
