DOS ain't dead - owb under dos/HX

owb under dos/HX (DOSX)

help me please
I try to run owb web browser under dos/HX ( dpmild32 -g owb.exe ecc....)
sometimes I've this output:

DPMILD32: Module = webkit-owb.dll
Dpmild32: file not found error
DPMILD32: webkit-owb.dll: cannot load PE file

sometimes another output: (but on 5/6 seconds appears the mouse arrow)

dpmild32 : import not found GetNumberFormatW
dpmild32: import not found GetCurrencyFormatW
dpmild32: file Kernel32.dll
dpmild32: icuin40.dll: cannot resolve import
dpmild32: icuin40.dll: cannot load PE file
dpmild32: icuin40.dll : cannot load PE file

To resolve those imports you have to download the preliminary hxrt v2.17.

Will there be any updates to HX or 2.17 final ?

Check older (cca 1 year) posts about this. IIRC neither download nor upload works. Let us know if you find a better binary :hungry:

Serious bug reports are welcome. There's currently the problem that a lot of anti-virus software has started to flag the binaries in HXRT as malware - and consequently, www.japheth.de is about to be regarded as a source of malware.

Yes, my Avast 4.8 reported 2 or more HXRT files (I can tell you exaclty which later) infected but I ignore this for all DOS apps on my disk - who writes viruses for DOS today? :-D You probably need to change code a bit to break the "virus" pattern but there may be problem that differen AV scans for different pattern and you cannot test all AVs.

Ok, thanks! I guess the "enummode" fix is simple. However, I'm unsure if I really should invest more time in this topic, it's likely to turn out to be a never-ending story.

NO :hungry: you didn't break it -> you are not supposed to "fix" it

Right :clap: Just switch to FASM or brew the PE's manually to get even more viriii and viriiiiii and viriiiiiiii ... :clap:

Good. Do you get much angry mail about this "BUG" ?

As you are known to be very sensitive about BUG report validity and seriousness, you could just close all those "BUG" 's as INVALID. As prevention measures, just put a warning on your site:

There is no malware on this site. If you don't understand the purpose of the files, don't download them. They are not intended to be tested for virii. I don't accept complaints about such issues, if you have problems, just stop using your "antivirus" or my files.

or switch to 7-ZIP format and encrypt the files with a good password (revealed on your site):

I think don't bother with it. I would drop a line in readme that some AV may be little bit paranoic but this release is virus free. Probably most users of HXRT are advanced users who can understand this may happen...

True. Nevertheless there's a problem because HXRT is redistributable. Nobody wants to distribute files which cause installation problems because of - false - virus alarms.

I'd like at least hdpmi.exe, dpmild32.exe and the couple of basic Win32 emulation dlls to be "clean".

Maybe would be enough just to send email to antivirus companies and ask them for deleting from virus database.

Yes but there are many of them. Once I sent one small utility to Grisoft (AVG) and they accepted it and fixed DB within few days.

I don't know if there's some organisation that maintains virus DB and whitelist that would be used by other AV companies...

	Avira tells in enummode.exe there is a TR/Crypt.XPACK.gen (trojan?) I don't know it's so dangerous

	yes, I have hxrt 2.17(new). I'll try to get ole32.dll from xp ( better?) .. but it's strange: the same package ( appli-vista.rar) I've mounted on various PC with winXP: on any PC works fine, on others don't load the .exe file. On freedos with HX and/or without doslfn there are many problems... I don't know if there is a new release of owb for dos users...

No. Most likely won't work at all.

Yes, I also "experienced" this. I guess it's due to M$'s great "side-by-side execution" invention, which fixed some dozens of well-known problems and introduced some dozens of new, unknown problems.

Whenever a program uses newer MSVC runtime dlls ( MSVCRx0.DLL ), you may expect such phenomenons. Progress is a delusion.
