connect 2 dos pc via usb cable (Users)

Hi,

it's possible connect 2 pc via usb cable for exchange files like interserver /interlink ?

Also from dos pc and another os ?

AFAIK no, even not under any other OS because USB is not designed for peer2peer direct connection. You would need some box between...

I once purchased a USB cable with a bulb in the middle which contained two USB devices back-to-back. This way you could transfer data from one PC to another.

I even got this transfer to work with DOSUSB, I think this is the "cable.bas" example included in the package.

What do you exactly mean with a "bulb" in the middle? Probably not a lightbulb but some controller, what USB class is it?

I have YFC BonEagle Magic USB Data Link with USB 2.0 controller
in the middle. There is no way to connect two PCs with common USB
cable. One of my colleagues tried that and damaged both motherboards.

In DOS 7.10 and DataLink ROM-DOS 7.1 I use Panasonic USBASPI.SYS 2.06
and Ninja ASPI DI1000DD.SYS 2.00; in Windows XP, Vista, and 7 no drivers
are necessary, for Windows 98 SE there is driver installation CD.

I did not try Windows 8 and 10. Also I did not test it under Linux or
any other DOS.

In all cases the other PC is emulated as USB disk. It has its own single
drive letter, and its disk, CD and diskette units are visible as the
subdirectories. The emulator uses labels as subdirectory names, but for
disks, diskettes and CDs without labels the names are NONAME1, NONAME2, ... etc.

Maybe this will help.
Sorry for my bad English (it is not my native language and I know it
should be better).

So in client pc you load usbaspi.sys and di1000dd , but in sever (the other PC) whath software you load?

The emulator firmware always treats the other PC like USB disk and there is
no client nor server. Both PCs handle the other one as external USB disk.
Naturally, for PC that runs DOS you have to install USB drivers for DOS.
As for any USB driver for DOS your mileage may vary and mostly depends on BIOS.

For Windows 98 SE you have to use driver CD from cable package (generic USB
driver does not work), and for newer Windows systems no USB drivers are
required.

No special data transfer program is needed, because PC sees the other PC as
USB disk. In DOS I use DOS Navigator OSP 6.4.0 and in Windows Total
Commander. Of course, you can use Windows Explorer instead.

I have info only for my cable, but you can visit Total Commander site to
get more info about different USB cables used for PC to PC connection.
See http://www.ghisler.com/cables/index.htm for several cables, but if
some USB cable does not work in Total Commander that does not mean it
will not work at all.

Note: You cannot transfer files from both PCs in the same time
(simultaneous bidirectional mode is not supported).

Aha, thanks for info, it may be usefull for me, I'll look for some cheap cable on ebay/DX if something is available...

BTW, georgpotthast is right. One of my friends did the same, but it was
several years ago and he cannot remember which brand of USB cable he used.
DOSUSB version was 1.4 from 2008 (free for personal use).

In description is mentioned that it support fast duplex tranfer. It's quite cheap, I'll try :)

Hm, unfortunatelly this cable doesn't implement mass-storage transfer but it expose a drive with some windows file trasfer application so it's pretty useless under DOS or other uncommon OS...

My cable also came with a Windows driver only. But DOSUSB and the cable.bas application allowed to transfer data with DOS. I did not need a driver from the cable manufacturer.

Probably these cables are build differently and the cable.bas transfer will not work with all cables.
