IMPORTANT: Website migration until the end of March 2022 (Announce)

Hi!

As people say: "The only constant in life is change."

Over the years I made a contract here and a contract there for hosting my websites. Now it's time to consolidate to stay on top of these things and to cut my expenses.

I already found a new home and did some tests with some of my other websites. Results were very good and so bttr-software.de will follow this path of migration.

Like in 2019 I will try to keep the downtime at a minimum (~2 days).

Will keep you updated.

Cheers,
Robert

Just an FYI for everyone here who would like a very low priced domain & hosting.

http://glennmcc.org/ costs me 20USD/yr for domain name registration
and 12USD/mo for hosting.

"low priced" depends on one's expectations. ;-)
Of course, prices also depend on included features of hosting. One has to read the fine print carefully to avoid surprises.

> http://glennmcc.org/ costs me 20USD/yr for domain name registration

I pay 1.68€/y for the .de domain then.
Currently: 4.65€/y.

> and 12USD/mo for hosting.

Then: 2.38€/m (50 Gbyte overall).
Currently: 3€/m (5 Gbyte for files + 10 Gbyte for mails)
Both already include a .de domain.

For any further discussion about domains & hosting, please open a new thread. But remember, this a forum about DOS. ;-)

I'll just make one last post in _this_ thread ;-)

glennmcc.org is fully maintained using the FTP capabilities of DOS Arachne :)

This isn't a forum about hosting DOS forums?

:-D

Two days ago I started migrating first data.
'Normal' HTML and PHP stuff is already running.
Next steps are to migrate mailboxes and this forum's SQL database.

Might we assume that this forum will be offline
for a short time during the final migration ?

Yes.

Before I flip the (DNS) switch, I will set the forum to maintenance mode, i.e., you can't login, or read or write messages. This will avoid people posting to the old instance, while the new is already online (on the new server).

Due to how DNS works, it can take up to 48 hours, until your computer knows, how to find the new server.

Mailbox content is successfully pre-migrated, thanks to imapsync.

I also successfully imported a copy of the SQL database. Afterwards I could login with my account, create a post with German umlauts, create a new user, and post with this new user. That's great! :-)

I could not test any email functions, because anything required for that, still points to my current hoster.

On the new server it might happen you will get certificate errors, if you use https. Just ignore them and accept the "risk". :-D
I also still have to find out after real migration how to disable automatic redirection from http to https for people with older web browsers.

I think, that's it and I will do the real migration during calendar week 12. Can't tell an exact date so far. Will tell you two days before.

I will flip the switch on Wednesday (23 Mar) afternoon (CET).

It's probably too late for this time, but it's usual to lower the TTL in preparation to making a significant DNS change. That means the later change is propagated quicker and if you need to undo it, that's quicker too.

Don't worry being late. I don't have access to such data or functions with my old provider. One of the reasons to switch.

If you read this, then you have reached the new home of this forum and migration was successful.

Because I didn't receive complaints about something not working anymore, I hereby declare this project as "finished" and remove the sticky mark.

Not sure if it's related to this, but I went to change my profile's time offset and it came back forbidden.

Can't reproduce this here with my test user.

Is it reproducible for you?
What's the exact error message?
Could you post a screenshot, please?

Yep.

I click my name, click "Edit user data", change "Time zone difference", click "OK - Save data" and get the error.
