DOS network configuration (Users)

Hi everyone,

I am not sure if I am posting to the correct category, so please don't mind if I do...

I was wondering about how many people, who use network and internet in DOS, actually use BOOTP/DHCP or configuration files (wattcp.cfg) to configure their network (like IP, netmask, gateway, dns server, ...).

So, do you prefer automatic configuration, if possible?
Do you prefer or have to use wattcp.cfg or similar files?
And, why? :)

Any opinions appreciated.

All the best,
Stefan / AH

I always prefer DHCP regardless of the OS, because it makes life much easier. Client computers always get working DNS and gateway settings for accessing the Internet. Only for servers I use static IP configuration, because most (all?) routers only support port forwarding to static IPs.

Hey, I'm the ultimate source, because I work as a computer technician / admin. ;-)

I think that every new DOS program should look at WATTCP.CFG (in directory of EXE file or according WATTCP.CFG environment variable)
Even programs not using watt32 or wattcp libraries should do it in this way because it is a semi-standard in DOS.

In wattcp.cfg you can specify fixed IP adress or your can select BOOTP/DHCP protocol. Both is possible.

I just fix "BOOTP" into "DHCP" and it works with DOSLYNX :-) Otherwise no idea about such stuff :-(

Also, I use Internet only, no other networks. Maybe DOS might be able to work well as server if a server app is running, but I doubt it can usably work as server in the background (there is an INT hack for this ???).
