PDF DOC DOCX ODT RTFM - document formats please help to comp (Users)

Again, RTFW , or, more likely, WRTFW this time :hungry:

I've been planning that page for 5 years, now, it's there, at least a priliminary version. Blame Ron with his DOCX converter (I'll test) and RayeR with his MUPDF port (tested, works) that the page came just now and it's that immature so far ;-)

Missing information:

RTF(M) - anyone has or knows technologies about reading those in DOS ?

CHM - does the CHM reader in FP IDE work now ? Any chance for a separate CHM reader without FP ? Laaca ? Marcov ?

DOCX - please boast with your progress, Ron

DOC - anyone except me dared to test AntiWorld in DOS ? Format documentation: since what time, how good is it ? Anyone dared to study it ?

About all the missing informatinos or if you find errors, please edit the page or let me know ;-)

If you see it only as a electronic document. The actual helpfunction and fulltext serach is then lost though, and that is what makes it interesting, and reasonably fast. (no need to scan all files for keywords/fulltext search)

Fine with FPC helpfiles. Some hardening was done in the meantime. Starting with the next release (say 1-2 months), there will be a CHM commandline compiler too.

> Any chance for a separate CHM reader without FP ?

Sure, since everything is open source.

But I'm not currently working on that, or planning to.

Martha will switch RTF to HTM and back. Works OK.

Early days yet, but it IS working, and Glenn McCorkle has created a plug-in (APM) for Arachne.
Plug-in works very well, and should be kept up to date with each version of docx2htm.exe.
Still a lot of work to do, but simple .docx files are presented quite well.
Graphics, colours are still some way off.

Where to find this Martha ?

DOCX2HTM is getting better but not faster :-|

Remaining issues:

- FreePASCAL CHM support
- Wiki - any other viewer apart from uploading to a Wiki sever and viewing with a non-DOS browser (Arachne doesn't understand CSS very well) ?

The original website seems to have died. :(

I have uploaded martha.zip from my collection.

Contains martha and ishtar.
Martha .rtf -> .htm
Ishtar .htm -> .rtf

A bit faster. I am concentrating on getting it right first.
Can now do images and tables (tables needs testing).

I also use Victor B. Wagner's CatDoc in DOS to display the text
portion of .DOC files... and it does .RTF as well! (So you might
want to update the Wiki.) Here's the link:

http://www.wagner.pp.ru/~vitus/software/catdoc/

It only does the text portion of the file and outputs it to
StdOut... so you need something to capture the output and page it
(like LIST). But that's the same as for AntiWord if viewing the
text output on the console.

The CatDoc package includes a couple of other MS Office tools as
well (convert Excel spreadsheets to comma-delimited, extract text
from PowerPoint files).

As far as my experience goes, CatDoc and AntiWord (and the others
i mentioned) each have their pluses and minuses... neither is
"perfect". And you have to set them up properly.

- Doug B.

P.S. Last CatDoc update was Feb 2006. Last AntiWord was Oct
2005. Both look frozen....

I pipe it through less.exe: catdoc filename.doc | less

Yeh, i noticed that too. The "2005" in "Feb 25 2005" is a typo. It should read "Feb 25 2006" -- that's what the latest executable is dated.

It is my intention to have docx2htm use pkzip, pkunzip, 7za, and any other unzipper.
At the moment, I trust 7za and it is written to use only that.
As I said, a work in progress.

Thank you. I will have a look at that. :)
I need a variety of .docx files to try to get as many hints as possible as to what tags to convert to html and what to leave alone.

Gosh -- I forgot about Malcolm Drury's (now-freeware, but closed-
source) View:

http://www3.sympatico.ca/mdrury/freeware.html

It's a DOS 16-bit TUI menu + paging viewer for the text portions
of these document types:

Windows Write / Wordpad
Word for Windows
DOS Word
Mac Word
Rich Text Format
Wordperfect
Ami Pro Wordstar
XYWrite
Microsoft Publisher
LarisWorks
HTML-formatted files
ASCII and ANSI

I'm not sure of what document versions it supports -- the last
VIEW update was Feb 2002 (about 4 years before the latest CatDoc
and AntiWord). Interestingly, it displays the raw text strings
of any file it doesn't decode -- useful for taking a quick look
through executable binaries, unknown document formats, etc.

Don't forget to use the separate configuration program,
especially if the program defaults to 25-rows when your DOS
screen is longer. (You can also reset colors and other
parameters.)

Freeware, because he's no longer developing it.

> I have no Windows beyond 3.1 !

I actually keep Win 3.11 around on an old computer, just for
those Win16 programs i don't want to load on my "pimped-up"
Win9x system. Yet i still do about 90% of my computing work in
DOS... by choice!

BTW, M$ released a few free upgrades for Win 3.1 to Win 3.11.
Probably not at the M$ site anymore, but i've run into them
elsewhere on the web. There's also a M$ (partial) Win32
upgrade for Win 3x.

Thank you for that - several new tags now added to docx2htm.exe, and it
seems to render that file OK.

DOCX2HTM has had some work. Rendering is somewhat cleaner.
Place the .docx file in the same directory as docx2htm.exe and rel2doc.exe

Run:
docx2htm.exe filename (creates doc2htm.htm)

then run:
rel2doc.exe (inserts any images into doc2htm.htm)

This will eventually be one single executable, but for the moment it is easier to develop by keeping the two functions as separate code.

Latest executables at:
http://www.ausreg.com/files/docx2htm.exe
http://www.ausreg.com/files/rel2doc.exe

Would appreciate any feedback.

Hah! Interesting observation. I'm curious if you ever compared
DOCX to the Oasis Open Document Format (ODF) text document (.ODT
extension) that Open Office Writer uses.

Just for larfs, using Writer, i saved both a blank page and a
"Hello World!" page using defaults, then unzipped them and did a
DIR:

Total for BLANK.ODT: 26,291 bytes in 9 files and 38 dirs
Total for HELLO.ODT: 26,641 bytes in 9 files and 38 dirs

There were lots o' blank directories!

Most of the files were .XML types.

Just curious....

I have one .odt file to look at, and it is superficially similar to .docx.
I don't have Open Office Writer, but I don't think there is a port to DOS.

Yeah, that would be right ! Even in .docx files it is so divided up into bits that refer to each other, across several directories.
But what struck me is how many tags there are in a single .xml component, compared to the actual payload of text.
The more I learn about this stuff, the more I wonder how this format became a "standard".

Much of the effort I am putting into docx2htm is involved in removing tags that are irrelevant to HTML, or replacing multiple groups of tags with single HTML tags.
At the present state of play, the main output file is half the size of the main source file, and I still have a way to go.

I might have a go at an odt2htm utility at some stage.

In the meantime, I have run out of enthusiasm for the docx2htm function, at least for the moment.

The complete set (so far) is at: http://www.ausreg.com/files/docx2htm.zip

It is still relatively slow on larger files, and I don't think that will change much any more. Maybe somebody clever might do better. :)

I may return to it later, but I have spent too many hours now trying to learn about M$'s OOXML, and the more I learn the more I dislike it.

I think know what is the problem with HX. I have used this program with my old computer, now trying with the new one I have had some problems with MSVCRT.DLL.

First: I have tried MSVCRT.DLL from WINDOWS 7 --> error!
After that: I have tried MSVCRT.DLL from this page: http://dll-download-system.com/ --> error again!
Finally: I used the old MSVCRT.DLL from Windows XP Service Pack 2 and... the program runs :) success!

I have sent you this last MSVCRT.DLL

Hey. Two things:

1) I've been using MSVCRT.DLL v6.10.9848.0 which runs ODT2TXT.EXE
fine on my system with HX v2.17 (i think it's the newest beta)
and MS-DOS 7.1. This MSVCRT version came from an "unofficial"
upgrade/fix on MDGX's page (but it looks like a M$ update
Q932590):

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm

2) ODT2HTM.EXE seems to be generally working ok for me, on my
limited number of not-very-complex .ODT documents. No big
issues, but...

One thing i did notice was that it often leaves an intermediary
file behind (doesn't delete it). In particular, it leaves behind
a MANIFEST.RDF file with all the files i've created using Open
Office Writer. On one of my files it also left behind one .JPG
(there were two in that particular file), and on an .ODT file i
got from somewhere else it left behind a .WMF file.

Another thing (and i don't know how detailed or specific you want
me to be, but erring on the side of inclusiveness...), i noticed
that some minor appearance/formatting things didn't come through,
like boldfacing, underlining, font sizing, and leading
whitespace.

Anyway, hope that helps. It's great to see DOS proggies continue
to be developed!

That is exactly the info I need. As I posted, I only have one .odt file
to test with, and I have deleted all "left-overs" for that one.
I will see to MANIFEST.RDF and image files (didn't know .odt has those).
I had better see if I need to include image files in the output file, but I
will have to find one with them included to see how it is being linked.

My (only) test file did not include boldfacing, underlining.
It did have font specifications (many, many) but never used any in anger.
I will hold leading whitespace in reserve for the moment.
I need to see these things "in the flesh" in order to hack my way through
them.

Can you email me one with these features ? Or point to one ?

For some crazy reason, MS doesn't give redistribution permission except to commercial users of Visual Studio. Which is weird since it's a "known .DLL" and part of the OS. Or at least different versions are (as you've noticed). Quite a pain. I don't know why MinGW uses that bastard, it's horrible. Several projects (e.g. Python) had problems due to that restriction.

Anyways, I think "COPY %windir%\system32\MSVCR71.DLL MSVCRT.DLL" (on 32-bit Windows Vista or 7) might work, but I can't verify right now.

The best solution would be to recompile with something that doesn't need it at all, e.g. OpenWatcom, but I know that's not always feasible.

Why not, it's a system library so the compiled program may be smaller when dynamic linked to it. I like it rather than cygwin that needs ~2MB DLL which is not part of the OS by default.

I'd say you missed one or two things:
http://sites.google.com/site/vdeeditor/ (note that Google prefers the https, but http works fine).
Text editor with a little formatting (knows left/center/right/justify, bold, italic, underline, and one or two other things). It reads .doc as plain text, but can read (with formatting, AFAIK) Wordperfect 6 and write RTF, Wordperfect 3/4 and 5, and Wordstar.
I suspect that GNU Oleo could be ported (it's ncurses), but siag (used to be siag.nu) is probably the more relevant spreadsheet: it used to support DOS, tsiag (curses) still exists in the latest versions, it supports half a dozen spreadsheet formats from various programs (xls2csv and--IIRC--a similar tool for ODS were bundled at points). The homepage has lapsed now, though there should be plenty of old mirrors/archives (thanks to Debian/Redhat/...)

PDF DOC DOCX ODT RTFM - document formats please help to comp

Hey guys. I have been messing around with this stuff, for now I am using Antiword to check DOC as PDF (usually like to keep formatting). I would like to try docx2htm but I am unsure which DOS app to use to open the htm files afterwards. I suppose Arachne could be used to read, but in order to edit the file I suppose a different program is needed.
Other than that, I would like to have a program to create DOC or RTF files that could be opened in standard MS Word. So I can share files with others.
Thanks for any help guys :)

I have tried that, but it's kinda slow on my machine. I was hoping to get a text mode word editor. I have been investigating VDE but it's not exactly easy to use.
Wordperfect seems good, but I can't import and export any common formats (outside PDF that is).

I will maybe try to create a RAM disk and run FLWriter from there. Maybe it will be faster.

Other than that, I checked with the people behind Antiword and they have given up on the project, because "LibreOffice does a better job". Too bad DOS has no LibreOffice.

Basically I wanted to have a program that would run well even on a 386/486 machine.
