There is probably no need to use Win95 or Win98. From the looks of it, the compilation process was actualy working — there were just some issues that with the mplayer source code that caused it to conflict with DJGPP's C header files.

More precisely, the mplayer source code was — for some reason — defining functions trunc(.) and truncf(.), but the C library had already defined these, and so there was a conflict.

(Perhaps the mplayer code decided to define these functions because it erroneously thought that they were not defined? Newer versions of the mplayer source code might have resolved this problem some way or other.)
