Gordon is MIA, haven't seen him around online lately, and his old (year-old) e-mail address just bounces now. Besides, his compiles (/beta/, not /current/) were 686+ only! So I think (from memory) that FPC is doing the right thing by sticking to /current/. Not sure why it doesn't unpack, though, but you (rr) and I have both reported some of that to UPX authors previously as a potential bug. As long as AS assembles and LD links correctly, I wouldn't majorly worry about it.

P.S. Juan Manuel Guerrero had issues with a linker script re: building latest TexInfo, so he reverted his reversion of BinUtils 2.17 (686+ again, meh). Better to e-mail him regarding what issues he had, even if you do decide to rebuild your own.
