I avoid confusion by saying "gibibytes" (GiB) and "mebibytes" (MiB).

If you ask for "1.5[g]" you will get 1.5 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 bytes.
If you ask for "1.5m" you will get 1.5 * 1024 * 1024 bytes.
