I'm sure dosbox-x emulates those (monochrome) adapters just fine.

However, with "alternate" I meant a SECOND adapter in the system, both being active. IIRC, the VGA adapter introduced this possibility ( see int 10h, ax=1A00h [ get display combination code ] ) and it was quite popular among developers in the early 90ties, since it allows to debug graphics applications without screen contents swapping ( the other option, using a serial/network connection, is by far not that comfortable ).
