Mpxplay's drivers are taken from ALSA and fitted to suit the player needs. My opinion re: DOS sound card drivers is that I prefer modular drivers to statically linked ones, if I would want to port contemporary software from Linux I would port OSS or ALSA, and if I would be strictly interested in DOS, I would write drivers which use an (obviously enhanced, but backward compatible) API like DIGIPAK's.
