I would forgot the numerical series.. and do like other image viewers do: select an initial image and display it. If you press next (down arrow here) the following image with next name is loaded and so on.
( assuming that files are sort by name now, the autoload sequential number is not necessary)

a full screen browser like SEA or QV, where you move cursor con up/down arrows and enter to view the pic ( more simple than current load box)

you can implement an key to change mode
- fit to width,
or
-zoom/shrink to fit window
so the program can be used as comic reader or traditional image viewer
