BIOS should not validate partition table, it's not his busyness, it just validte 55AA signature at end of MBR.

I was also thinking about reusing CHS fields that are not needed as newer systems use LBA but there are systems that may complain about CHS and LBA mismatch or even silently "repair" it that would lead to partition curruption.

There are already GPT implementations for legacy OSes, like Paragon for WINXP and even R. Loew did something for Win98 so it should not be problem to implement it.
