It's clearly documented how to switch between modes. To switch from long mode to real-mode is no problem at all. The only switches that aren't (directly) possible is from legacy 32-bit paging to PAE-paging and vice versa - because that requires to set both cpu registers CR3 and CR4 simultaneously.
