Oberon-07 has simpler data support in nested procedures: (only) strictly local or strictly global. AFAIK, this is comparable to standard C (not GCC extensions). It's one of many simplifications made in that dialect. It presumably does simplify stack management quite a bit. I know you disregard Oberon overall, but ....
