The Core2 generations are slowly getting extinct (and it will probably at least another year before a release with this change), but it would kill off quite usable Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge machines.

My own personal workstation and laptop are Ivy Bridge, though I have a newer replacement for the workstation (a Ryzen 2600)

As a concept it is nice. But in these cases, troublefree introduction is everything. The whole gcc_s attempt was also a support nightmare.
