Rather it looks like it should have been "get_played_sample_count() != 0". But that code is the same in AdvanceMame's wss, it seems that no one has detected that bug until now.

Just look at ALSA's SB live driver and see what it does differently. AFAIK the AC97 part is drawn from ALSA.
