Not sure why MS is holding so tightly to such a patent. It's not like LFNs on FAT are a threat to their business. And Linux etc. have had VFAT support for a long time without issues.

FAT is ubiquitous and well-understood, unlike NTFS. And MS does charge like $0.25 or so per storage device that comes with LFN-enabled FAT.

Linux seems less interested in exFAT than BTRFS and ext4 these days. (And still lots of people whining for ZFS.)

It actually makes no sense to continue with it in DOS, especially if it's patented. But we have no FS developers anyways, so it's moot.
