Tar is no problem, there is a tar comp/decompressor in src, so is gzip (but it compresses worse then zip).

The 7z on the compression side only could be done if sb really cared. Make a nice report, test as much you can on all systems (including network drives, unix drives without full permissions, LFN, LFN on older systems, don't forget OS/2 and check availability for BeOS, AmigaOS etc), and submit it to the bugrepo, maybe sb will pick it up.
