Not necessary. 7-Zip's zip/bzip2/gzip compression ratios are very good, and formats are all standard.

7-Zip is released by its author only for Windows. However p7zip has been ported to a bunch of platforms - a partial list is at the 7-Zip home site. Here are a few more:

Amiga

There are also OS/2 file managers that open .7z archives.
